چکیده
We study fairness in economies where humans consume one private good and public representing the welfare of other species. show that a social evaluator cannot be egalitarian with respect to while always respecting humans’ unanimous preferences. One solution is preferences only when doing so does not lead decrease Social satisfying these properties reveal surprising connections between concerns for species, egalitarianism among humans, unanimity: latter two imply form dictatorship from strongest preference (JEL D11, D63, H41)

Welfare egalitarianism in non-rival environments
We study equity in economies where a set of agents commonly own a technology producing a non-rival good from their private contributions. A social ordering function associates to each economy a complete ranking of the allocations. We build social ordering functions satisfying the property that individual welfare levels exceeding a legitimate upper bound should be reduced. Combining that propert...
متن کاملRoberts' Theorem with Neutrality: A Social Welfare Ordering Approach
We consider dominant strategy implementation in private values settings, when agents have multi-dimensional types, the set of alternatives is finite, monetary transfers are allowed, and agents have quasi-linear utilities. We show that any implementable and neutral social choice function must be a weighted welfare maximizer if the type space of every agent is an m-dimensional open interval, wher...
متن کاملFair welfare maximization
We consider the general problem of finding fair constrained resource allocations. As a criterion for fairness we propose an inequality index, termed “fairness ratio,” the maximization of which produces Lorenz-undominated, Pareto-optimal allocations. The fairness ratio does not depend on the choice of any particular social welfare function, and hence it can be used for an a priori evaluation of ...

متن کاملA common ground for resource and welfare egalitarianism
Resource egalitarianism and welfare egalitarianism are two focal conceptions of distributive justice. We show in this paper that they share a solid common ground. To do so, we analyze a simple model of resource allocation in which agents’ abilities (to transform the resource into an interpersonally comparable outcome) and starting points may differ. Both conceptions of egalitarianism are natura...
